A special day for everything French
In honor of Bastille Day, the French holiday celebrated July 14, everything French in the shop is 15% off today and tomorrow!
In 1789 troops and revolutionaries stormed the formidable medieval Bastille fortress, then in use to hold political prisoners. Though only seven prisoners were there when the Bastille was stormed, its existence was symbolic of the oppressive Bourbon monarchy. Anger over food shortages and failed efforts to assemble and draft a constitution fueled the attack, which signaled the beginning of the French Revolution and the eventual overthrow of King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette.
The new revolutionary government ordered the fortress torn down, and the last stone was removed in 1790
